The city lies at the confluence of the Sava and Danube in central Serbia, where the Pannonian Plain meets the Balkan Peninsula. The population of the Belgrade according census of 2011 was 1,233,796 and at the surroundings lived 1,659,440 [4]. It is the largest city in the former Yugoslavia, and by population ranks fourth in Southeast Europe after Istanbul, Athens and Bucharest.
